When Moles Become a Concern

There are some of us who are prone to being mole people. All that I mean by this is that you are prone to having moles pop up in random places on your body. It is somewhat similar for those people who are prone to getting freckles or who already have freckles on their face, etc. While moles help to define who we are, they can sometimes be annoying- and in extreme cases, they can be deadly.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer in which the size, shape, color or feel of a mole changes. Melanoma can also make its appearance as a brand new mole on your skin. If you are concerned about the amount of moles on your skin and whether or not you are at risk for developing melanoma, then you should definitely consult with a dermatologist who will be better able to assess the situation. For most people with moles, there aren't any problems, issues or complications- they are simply prone to getting moles. However, there are some things that you should keep in mind when thinking about moles.

The first thing that you will want to consider when talking about moles is the asymmetry of the mole. A common concern for melanoma is any sort of change in the shape of your mole where one half of the mole doesn't match the other half. Another thing that you will want to keep in mind is the border of the mole. This simply refers to the edge of the mole. For instance, if the edges are ragged, blurred or irregular, you will probably want to have the mole checked. Another consideration when talking about moles is the color of the mole. The color is perhaps the first thing that people notice and with good reason. For example, if the color is uneven or includes varying shades of black, brown, tan or is multicolored in any way, then you should consult with your doctor. Lastly, when talking about moles, you need to definitely consider the diameter of the mole. If there is any change in size, then you should consult your doctor. Typically, victims of melanoma notice a change in the diameter of their mole where the mole will actually become larger.

Although moles might be considered scary and tragic to some people with the recent discussions of melanoma, it should be noted that melanoma is easily cued if it is diagnosed and treated early. If you are someone who has a lot of moles or who has freckles, it is probably a wise idea to make sure that you have fairly regularly scheduled appointments to chat with a dermatologist. If melanoma is not caught in its early stages and removed, cancer cells can grow downward from the surface of the skin and invade healthy tissue. If the cancerous cells spread to other parts of the body from there, it can be difficult to control and may result in the death of an individual. The best way to protect yourself from melanoma is to limit your exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This means wearing a hat and slathering on that sunblock prior to heading outside!
